Report Feature: WHTI, the Recession, and Cross-Border Travel

In the Summer 2010 Border Policy Brief released by the Border Policy Research Institute (BPRI), cross-border travel is reexamined in light of the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 and the implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), a US law that requires travelers to have passports when travelling to the US. Changes in cross-border trends at both the Canada-US and US-Mexico borders are analyzed to determine which factors more greatly affected travel.

Arizona Legislation Brings Immigration Reform Back Into the Spotlight

On April 23, 2010, Governor Jan Brewer passed SB 1070, a piece of legislation which has sparked protests on both sides of the US-Mexican border. The law, which is to take effect in 90 days, was sponsored by state senator Russell Pearce and allows police to detain people they "reasonably suspect are in the country without authorization." Similarly, it also makes it a crime to not carry immigration papers. A very divisive issue, national immigration reform has been brought back into the spotlight.

NORAD fighter jets have been training over Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver in preparation for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The 2010 Olympic Integrated Exercise Program was designed to confirm that all levels of government, including the bi-national NORAD organization, can respond to emergencies during the Games. The Vancouver Sun reports that the "training is designed to hone NORAD's intercept and identification operations, and is part of NORAD's training to support the RCMP-led security operations for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games".
