Baird announces $96M boost to airport cargo security

Citing the threat of terrorism, Transport Minister John Baird has announced $96-million in funding for commercial-cargo-screening programs to be spent over the next five years. The money will be spent on programs that essentially act like customs in reverse: Making sure Canadian companies don't inadvertently export any bombs or terrorist stowaways with their commodities. Mr. Baird asserted that Canada exports almost $100-billion dollars by air annually - or more than the agricultural, oil, and forestry sectors combined. For that reason, he said, the effect of any terrorist bomb hidden in commercial cargo would be devastating to the economy.
